Zero where something has only just appeared, one where it is finished. It is carried per point, so the base of a branch reads older than its tip, which is what lets a plant thicken from the bottom as it grows.
Remap it into a radius to author your own thickening curve, or into a scale to unfurl a leaf. Where nothing staged any growth it reads as finished everywhere, so it changes nothing until you use it.
