Think of it as the shape you would see if you cut through the finished object. An n-sided shape is the limb and pipe section: four sides gives a square bar, eight or more rounds it off.

The rest are blade sections, described by width and thickness. Wedge is single-edged, with a flat spine and one cutting edge, which is what a knife or a cleaver wants and what a three-sided shape cannot fake, because a triangle puts a corner where the spine should be. Lens is a curved grind, diamond has a ridge down the middle, hexagon adds flat faces, and fullered sinks a groove into both sides.
