Bevel

Chamfers sharp edges, which is most of what stops a box reading as a placeholder.

Real objects have no perfectly sharp edges, and a chamfer is what catches light along them. Bricks, planks, crates and panels all read as made rather than generated once their edges are broken.

Selection scales the chamfer per corner rather than switching it on or off, so a field can chamfer only the top edges of a cliff while the base stays a clean cut.

Watch out

It works on closed shapes. Bevelling something with an open edge opens it further; on an open shell use a shallow inset instead.
