This is what makes recursion possible. Inset a face, then select what the inset created, then inset that: a panel inside a panel inside a panel, with no index typed anywhere.
Wire the mesh from before the operation into this, and the selection into a node after it. Because nothing is typed, the whole chain survives any change upstream.
