Blade tips and drill bits are tapers and twists. Horns and cart handles are bends. Torsos and limb muscle are bulges, and a negative bulge pinches a waist. A leaning post is a shear.
Bend makes one steady curve, so it gives you a C and never an S. For a shape that follows an arbitrary path, use Curve Deform.

Watch out
Bend, twist and bulge need rings through the middle of the shape. A box with only its corners tilts instead of curving, so raise the segment counts on the source first.
Taper is the fraction the tip keeps, not the amount removed. A value of 0.99 shows almost no taper at all.
